Our Solution

There is a need for a reliable, integrated method of detecting and reporting PPI in vivo while the implant can still be saved. Our device will be integrated into the implant and alert the patient of an infection before any symptoms are present. When an infection is present, white blood cells cause a qualitative change in the optical properties of synovial fluid. Our device takes advantage of this qualitative change by measuring the scattering of light from an LED. Once the level of scattering surpasses a threshold value, the positive diagnosis is sent outside the body to notify the patient of the presence of infection. Our device provides an integrated, systematic method for continual monitoring of the synovial space to ensure highly sensitive and efficient monitoring of infection.
